Telugu is the most prominent member of the Dravidian language family. Primarily spoken in south-eastern India, it is the official language of the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, located north of today's Chennai city (formerly Madras). The Dravidian languages are considered some of the oldest ever spoken. Specifically, Tamil, one of Telugu's "cousin" languages, is recognized as having been around approximately 5,000 years ago.
Approximately 75 million speakers of this language live in India and worldwide. After Hindi and Bengali, it is the third most frequently spoken of all the Indian languages. Therefore, being well-versed in this beautiful language would be very helpful. Another primary reason to learn Telugu is that it is the fastest-growing community in the United States of America. The Telugu film industry, known as "Tollywood," boasts some outstanding movies that should be watched in the original language.
